My Rant: Art and philosophy go hand-in-hand, lockstep with each other, unfolding into popular consciousness. Seldom does one far outrun the other..Freud had D.H. Lawrence and Dali. The Existentialists had Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Wyeth. The Post-Modernists had Pynchon, Vonnegut, and Duchamp.
The Integralists have Alex Gray, Paul Lonely, and perhaps me, at least for now. But I'm trying to do my own small part to give a voice to the insights and dilemmas constructive-developmental theory addresses, through fiction. As an antidote to the hopeless and sometimes hopelessly mediocre post-modern fiction of the 20th Century (that's you Don DeLillo and especially you, Thomas Pynchon), I believe in fiction that actually does more just spin one tired irony after another, or believe in its own greatness because it aspires to be endlessly self-referencing, self-congratulatory, self-important.
William James, Aldous Huxely, Huston Smith, Ernest Becker, Ken Wilber, Bob Kegan – they have opened the door to a broader, more comprehensive map of reality. Art can no longer exist in the vacuum of postmodernism, where genius is pronounced dead, and mediocrity and irony congratulate one another on their empty existence.
I've got an ax to grind. Pynchon – you're first.
